    Venue and travel

The Chía and Sabana Centro areas are known for their beauty and wide range of entertainment options. The area has plenty of restaurants, clubs, cafés (don’t forget to taste the excellent Colombian coffee), bars and shopping malls. The colonial downtowns of Chía and of the other nearby towns are beautiful and worth visiting. The area has also many places of historical, religious and natural interest such as the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral, the Guatavita lake or the Nemocón salt mine.

    Travel Information

Conference location: Chía, Colombia. 20 Km north of Bogotá, the capital of Colombia.

Chía, indigenous name for “moon”, is a town located in the Sabana high plain at 2600 meters above sea level (8660 feet above sea level). The average temperatures year-round range between 5 °C (46 °F) and 20 °C (68 °F).

The population is around 160,000 inhabitants.

    Arriving in Colombia

The main airport is El Dorado in Bogotá (BOG).

Direct flights to the BOG airport from:

    • Most Latin-American and the Caribbean capital cities.
    • USA (Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Atlanta, Houston and Dallas) and Canada (Toronto and Montreal).
    • Europe (London, Madrid, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich and Amsterdam).
    • Middle East (Istanbul, and Dubai).

Getting to Chía and to Bogotá from the BOG Airport

A taxi ride from the airport to Chía costs around USD 45–50, depending on the time of day. A taxi ride to central or northern Bogotá costs between USD 15 and 30. Taxis can either be prepaid or metered. Booth are located at door 5.

Prepaid service: Taxi Imperial is a reputable company.
Metered taxis: Ask for the official ones. These are easily identified yellow cars that line up just outside the exit doors. An airport staff member will guide you just in case. These taxis only accept cash or money transfers from local digital wallets or local banks.

Uber, DiDi, InDrive, and other ride-hailing apps are available. However, drivers may ask you to meet them a few steps away from the exit doors. In all cases, be aware that most drivers speak only Spanish. Car rentals are widely available (but not recommended) at the airport and in downtown locations in Bogotá. Major car rental companies have branches inside the airport premises.

    Moving around

Frequent buses, taxis, Uber, and Didi connect Bogotá and Chía. A long-distance bus from the Bogotá northern bus terminal to Chía costs less than USD 2. Don’t use buses unless you feel adventurous. Buses can be tricky to decipher. They don’t have schedules, stop everywhere and only accept cash. You may also need to be fluent in Spanish. A local taxi ride in Chía costs less than USD 7; a local bus ride is less than USD 1. We do not recommend hailing taxis on the streets. Ask the staff in your hotel or use a ride-hailing app.

    Accommodation

Chía and other nearby towns offer a choice of accommodations ranging from hostels and budget apartments to 5-star hotels. There are also countless options in Bogotá.

    Money

The Colombian currency is the Colombian peso (COP). At the time of writing COP 4100 = 1 USD. Get some cash at the airport as credit/debit cards are not always accepted. Money exchange offices and ATMs are widely available at the airport.
