Most
of our undergraduate programs, like the great majority of others
in Colombia, take 10 semesters to complete.
This is much longer than first-degree programs in many other countries; and one of the reasons is that the graduate should be a fully-fledged professional as of graduation day, and will already have had a taste of practicing the profession during at least one work-study semester: no further apprenticeship, pupillage or internship is needed.
Also, the equivalent of about one year of studies – spread through the program – is given over to general studies in the humanities. Thus the “core” of the program in effect tends to occupy a more familiar period, of three years of academic time.
